I started The Heyokah because I needed it myself. After years of working in digital advertising, running on deadlines and caffeine, something broke open. It wasn’t dramatic. Just a quiet sense that I’d been ignoring the part of me that needed real space—offscreen, offline, away from numbers and jargon and the constant press of deliverables.
I’ve led meditation groups for years. I've cooked in restaurants, bartended, managed nightclubs, guarded paintings in a museum. I’ve written poems that will never be published and helped build onboarding programs for corporate teams. None of it fits into a clean line, but all of it helped me build this.
The Heyokah isn’t a wellness brand. It’s not optimized. It’s a place to stop doing. A place to listen differently. I host retreats because some people need quiet to write. Others need to cry in the woods. Some just want to remember how to breathe.
You don’t need to be a writer or creative to come here. You just need to be human.
The aim of The Heyokah is to provide resources for mental wellness for everyone and find ways to incorporate mindfulness and meditation practices to every day life. It is about finding comfort in the uncomfortable. It is about helping people find their authentic self for themselves.
Mindfulness and mental health have become hot topics recently, in light of a global pandemic and a worldwide recognition of people's worth and value. And though much needed and, especially for the marginalized and exploited, a long time coming. However, in the jump to be successful in the mental health game, we have lost sight of what we are trying to accomplish - to become authentic human beings and to participate in the struggle of our species to find relevance instead of dominance. But we have become so serious about this endeavor we have forgotten to laugh - at ourselves, at others, at our mistakes and our successes.
Meditation is the discovery that the point of life is always arrived at in the immediate moment. - Alan Watts
