The aim of The Heyokah is to provide resources for mental wellness for everyone and find ways to incorporate mindfulness and meditation practices to every day life. It is about finding comfort in the uncomfortable. It is about helping people find their authentic self for themselves.
Meditation is the discovery that the point of life is always arrived at in the immediate moment. - Alan Watts
In the culture of the Sioux (Lakota and Dakota people) of the Great Plains of the Americas, the heyoka can be seen as sort of a sacred clown. The heyoka is a contrarian, a jester, a satirist, who speaks, moves and reacts in an opposite fashion to the people around them. Only those having visions of the thunder beings of the west, the Wakíŋyaŋ, and who are recognized as such by the community, can take on the ceremonial role of the heyoka.
Only those who have had visions of the thunder beings of the west can act as heyokas. They have sacred power and they share some of this with all the people, but they do it through funny actions. When a vision comes from the thunder beings of the West, it comes with terror like a thunder storm; but when the storm of vision has passed, the world is greener and happier; for wherever the truth of vision comes upon the world, it is like a rain. The world, you see, is happier after the terror of the storm.
Mindfulness and mental health have become hot topics recently, in light of a global pandemic and a worldwide recognition of people's worth and value. And though much needed and, especially for the marginalized and exploited, a long time coming. However, in the jump to be successful in the mental health game, we have lost sight of what we are trying to accomplish - to become authentic human beings and to participate in the struggle of our species to find relevance instead of dominance. But we have become so serious about this endeavor we have forgotten to laugh - at ourselves, at others, at our mistakes and our successes.
The purpose of The Heyokah is to find your purpose through meditation and mindfulness techniques. Everyone is different and we would like to provide resources for a different number of perspectives.
